A big man with a small heart. A dedicated business and family man. Frans changed the image if stock car racing at the Goodwood Oval by introducing the “Flexi Flyer” , winning enough silver to make many a driver green with envy and shattering  lap records at Worcester, Paarl and Goodwood. We had the pleasure of meeting up with him recently and remains the enthusiastic and interesting character he always was, now  a bit older but never the less the same Frans.

I was born in Touwsrivier, but moved to Worcester with my parents in 1951 where I attended The Drostdy Technical High School. I later joined Jaffe’s Ford as an apprentice mechanic and used to fix and service my Fathers two vehicles in my spare time. In 1962 my Father went into partnership and started his own business - Prima Klipbrekery,

After my Father had died in a motor accident in 1967 I decided to leave Jaffe’s to carry on with the business. Around  1969 I had my hands full, working long hours and trying to find time for my family. In 1970 I signed up at the Worcester Motor Club and bought my first stock car - a 1957 Ford racing with the number 6 and sponsoring myself. I raced the car with success at both the Worcester and Kleinplasie Clubs. I bought my second car in 1972 , a Holden Monaro which I turned into a stock car myself - also racing with the No. 6 at the time, the car turned out to be quite quick beating Bob Hartly on a number  -

of occasions managed  to accomplish  the fastest lap time as well as a trophy for accumulating the most points for 3 successive years. I drove for the club until  1977/78 before joining the Paarl Motor Club  in 1978 where I again broke the lap record and obtaining first place for the club in that year. By this time I was looking for some stronger competition and joined the Cape Hell Drivers  in 1981/82 season. In 1981 I was privileged to accompany 5 other members to the USA to watch some racing and maybe come back with new ideas.

Great fun and experience on a visit to the USA in the early 80’s - looks like beer by the gallon - note all the familiar faces (from left Frans du Toit, Kotie Malan, Anton Tallie, Louw Bosch and Andrew Fontini. It was interesting to see the American organisation and racing styles as well as the cars used and probably influenced Hell Driving at Goodwood to a certain extent.

As a result, the tour ended up  with me  buying a Camaro Flexi  and importing it to South Africa. I made my first appearance at Goodwood  with my new Camaro Flexi  in 1983 and held the lap record  for 4 years, the most points for the club for 3 years, won the SA Championships trophy and also received WP Colours. In 1987, I also won he V8 Class Championship. My lower,wider and faster  Flexi soon caught on with some of the drivers and it wasn’t to long before drivers  like Louw Bosch, Coenie Lombard, Kobus Kroese and Goofy Fouche amongst others were runing their own Flexi’s.

“I went on to win the 92/93 championships and in 93/94 had entered a new “Late model” - again shattering the lap time at 20.4 seconds. (was hoping for 19 seconds) I Have since retired from the sport , but still remain a huge supporter and would think nothing of boarding a plane and fly off to a venue where a race or a jump will take place. I have many good memories of the Goodwood Oval, ones that could never be replaced”.

Die volgende uittreksels is van 'n publikasie geneem wat deur Francois se kinders, vriende en werknemers  op die geleentheid van sy 60ste verjaarsdag geplaas is - 22 Augustus 2006

Ek is vertel hoe trots my pa was met my geboorte. ń Seun na twee dogters. Ek dink die verhouding tussen my en my pa het latere jare meer en meer ontwikkel, sienende ek ń redelike rebel was in my tienerjare. Daar is die kenmerkende eienskappe wat ek wil uitlig. Hy is ń standvastige mens, ek kan hom enige tyd bel met probleme of vra en ek kan altyd staatmaak op n antwoord of oplossing. Sy hart is ook maar klein, en my mooiste is wanneer hy wel n traanyjie pik gedurende n troue of mooi fliek. Dit word weerspieel ook met sy liefde vir sy ouers - die manier wat hy sy ma lief gehad het en dan ook met die fototjie van sy pa in sy klerekas, die kleinkinders en omgee vir sy medemens.

Pa, ek moet dankie se vir absoluut alles. En ja, insluitende dat ek goed bederf was en is!!! Ek sou nie van dag gelukkig in my werk gewees het as dit nie vir my ouers was wat my geonderstuen en gehelp het nie. Toe ek die besluit van my beroep moes neem was daar geen druk van my pa af om by Prima te werk nie en ek kan onthou Pa se woorde was dat ek moet doen wat my liefde is, en dan sal ek n sukses daarvan maak, Baie dankie vir die lekker geselsies op die foon en nou moet ek vra dat Pa sal begin rustig word, die lewe ten volle geniet en doen wat net Pa nog altyd wou gedoen het. Maak net seker Ma weet vroegtydig daarvan, en nie op die “tipie” nie. Ek sal graag die geleentheid wil gebruik om regtig dankie te se vir Ma. Ma is n vrou, Ouma, ma en vriendin duisend , dis mooilik om n dag dear te gaan sonder om met ma kontak te maak. Baie lief vir albei van julle en wens julle alles van die beste toe.

Frans is alom bekend daarvoor dat hy nie eintlik omgee vir spoed nie, hoe vinniger, hoe beter. So kom ek een Saterdagmiddag by hom. Hy gaan wys my toe sy nuwe Mercedes -sport. Ek maak toe ń fout om te vra hoe vinnig die kar kan ry. Net daar besluit hy toe om my op ń toetsrit te neem. Sonder om mooi te dink stem ek toe per ongelik in. Ek moes geweet het wat vir my wag. Sommer met die wegtrek is ek al tussen die kussings en toe weet ek, hier kom n ding! Ons was skaars op die N1 toe ek agter kom dat ons heelwat vinniger as normaalweg ry.  Toe sê Frans ek moet na die speedometer kyk. Ek loer toe maar net met die een oog en sien 240km/h. Net daar sê ek toe vir hom hy kan maar omdraai ek het klaar genoeg gesien en gevoel dankie, want ek ’het toe gesien dat hy is duidelik nog nie op volspoed nie en as ek nie nou praat nie haal ons dalk die 400km/h merk. Die tog terug was ietwat meer plesier, maar daardie dag het ek besluit om nooit weer vir Frans du Toit te vra hoe vinnig say karre kan ry nie.

Franscois, een ding wat ons van you geleer het, is absolute NEEDRIGHEID. Nooit maar nooit ag jy jouself beter as die volende person nie. Baie dankie vir hierdie lewensles wat ons by you geleer het. Ook ń uitstande kenmerk is dat geen OPOFFFERING ooit vir jou te groot is nie. Dankie ook hiervoor. PLANNE MAAK is seker een van die dinge waarop jy floreer. Wat maak ons as die olie vir die chips aan die brand slaan en die dak en mure van die vakansie-huis wat pikswart van die rook is, moet gewas word? Alles is gepak en daar is nie veel meer as ń “mop” nie - dan kom jy met die plan - trek uit you “T-shirt” en begin was. Wel dit het gewerk, want alles was mooi skoon toe ons weg is!

I am told how proud my father was when I was born. A son after two daughters. I think the relationship between me and my father became more and more developed in later years, seeing that I was quite a rebel during my teens. There are characteristics that I want to highlight. He is a steadfast man, I can call him any time with problems or questions and I can rely on an answer or solution. His heart is small, and my best is when he sheds  tear  during a wedding or beautiful movie. It also reflects in his love for his parents - the way he loved his mother and also with the photo of his father in his wardrobe, grandchildren and caring for his fellow  man.

Dad, I must thank you for absolutely everything. And yes, including that I was spoiled and well and still is!!! I would not have been happy in my job if it were not for my parents who helped and supported me and when I had to take the decision for my career, there was no pressure from my Father to work at Prima and I can remember what Dad's words were, that I should do what I love, and I will make a success of It. Many thanks for the nice chats on the phone and now I have to ask Dad to start taking it easy, enjoy life fully and do what Dad always wanted to do. Just make sure Mom knows in advance, and not on the "tipie". I really would like to use this opportunity to thank you and Mom. Mom is a wife, grandmother, mother and a real friend. It’s difficult to pass a day without making contact with my mother. I love you both very much  and wish you all the best.

Frans is widely known that he does not really care about speed, the faster the better. I visited him one Saturday afternoon. He showed me his new Mercedes sports. I made a mistake by asking how fast the car can  go. He decided there and then to take me on a test drive. Without thinking first, I  agreed. I didn’t know what I was letting myself in for . Before long, I found myself between the cushions and I just knew, here it comes! We were barely on the N1 when I realised that we were travelling much faster than normal. Frans told me to look at the speedometer, I glanced with one eye and saw 240km / h. Right there I told him he can turn around,  I've seen and felt enough thank you, because I saw he was clearly not at full speed yet and if I do not speak now, we may reach the 400km / h mark. The trip back was a bit more fun, but that day I decided never again to ask Frans du Toit how fast his cars can go.

Franscois, one thing we have learned from you, absolute HUMILITY. But you never consider yourself better than the next person. Thank you for this lesson we have learned from you. Also an outstanding character feature is that no sacrifice is ever too big for you. Thank you for this. MAKING PLANS is one of the areas that you prosper in. What if the oil for the chips caught on fire and the roof and walls of the holiday home became pitch black from the smoke, must it be washed? Everything is packed and there is not much more than a "mop" - then you come up with the plan, you remove your "T-shirt" and start washing. Well it worked because everything was clean when we left!

God het geen witbroodtjies, maar Mnr du Toit n uitverkorene, want hy het altyd tyd ver elkeen van ons, maak nie saak of dit tov n probleem of die tyd wat hy neem om elkeen persoonlik elke dag te kom groet nie, Baie dankie vir ń Pa met n groot hart.
